Justin L. Cherfoli is a Managing Director in the Dispute Advisory & Forensic Services Group. He serves as the practice leader of the Dispute Advisory and Forensic Services group in Detroit as well as the national practice leader for the firm’s Family Law Valuation & Consulting group. Mr. Cherfoli has provided valuation, dispute advisory, and forensic accounting services for numerous purposes including marital dissolutions, shareholder disputes, commercial litigation, estate and gift taxation, financing, purchase and sale advisement, Employee Stock Ownership Plans, C Corporation to S Corporation conversions, intellectual property valuations, reasonable compensation, executive stock options, and other tax, corporate, and litigation related matters. Additionally, Mr. Cherfoli has been actively involved in providing a broad range of financial advice to trial lawyers throughout the dispute process, including matters involving economic damage analysis, diminution in business value, breach of contract, financial modeling, forensic accounting, fraud examinations, and disputes related to business transactions. Mr. Cherfoli also serves as a court-appointed and/or mutually agreed-upon financial expert in shareholder disputes and divorce matters.
In addition to his role as co-leader of SRR’s Professional & Commercial Services practice, Mr. Cherfoli’s experience encompasses a wide range of industries including manufacturing, automotive suppliers, insurance, staffing, steel, governmental contractors, telecommunications, physician & professional practices, surgery clinics, construction contractors, restaurants, grocery stores, private equity funds, automotive dealerships, waste management, environmental technologies and services, health care, trucking, stamping, advertising, retail, and wholesale distribution. Mr. Cherfoli has also provided valuation and consulting services for several international clients.
Mr. Cherfoli was a chapter author to the chapters entitled “Valuation in Marital Dissolution” and “Valuation in Shareholder and Partner Disputes” in Business Valuation, published by the Law Journal Press, a division of ALM Media Properties, LLC. He was also a contributing author to the chapter entitled “Valuation Nuances in Litigation” in Business Valuation: A Primer for the Legal Professional, published by the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association. Mr. Cherfoli has presented continuing education seminars on business valuation, lost profits, stock options, understanding tax returns, and tools for improving management decision-making. He has also published several articles on stock options, valuation and other related topics.
Prior to joining SRR, Mr. Cherfoli was with Ernst & Young, LLP in its Assurance and Advisory Business Services Group in Detroit.
Mr. Cherfoli is a member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Mr. Cherfoli is a Life Fellow of the Oakland County Bar Foundation. Mr. Cherfoli was a 2009 recipient of Crain’s Detroit Business “40 Under 40” award, an honor given to 40 professionals in Southeastern Michigan who have achieved business success and made a positive impact in the community before reaching the age of 40.
